Denmark and Greenland have clarified that a proposed agreement to allow the United States to expand its military presence in Greenland will not infringe upon the Arctic territory’s sovereignty or the self-determination rights of its people. This statement comes in response to U.S. President Donald Trump’s announcement of an agreement granting the U.S. what he termed “permanent control” over Greenland’s security.
Greenland’s Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen emphasized that the agreement recognizes Greenland’s sovereignty, territorial integrity, and the rights of the Greenlandic people to self-determination. Similarly, Danish Foreign Minister Lars Lokke Rasmussen noted that the arrangement could bolster security in the Arctic and North Atlantic while respecting Denmark’s conditions concerning Greenland’s sovereignty.
