The anticipated disarmament process involving the PKK and its affiliates, as discussed by Türkiye’s Parliament Speaker Numan Kurtulmuş, could play a pivotal role in bolstering stability in Iraq and fostering peace throughout the region. Kurtulmuş, speaking in Ankara alongside Iraqi Parliament Speaker Heybet Halbusi, noted that this initiative is expected to commence next month and could enhance security not only in Iraq but also in Syria.
This potential disarmament is part of Türkiye’s broader strategy for a “terror-free Türkiye” and a “terror-free region,” with Kurtulmuş emphasizing the need for heightened regional cooperation and a resolution to longstanding divisions. He underscored the importance of collaborative efforts among regional nations to achieve enduring stability and peace.
Kurtulmuş also highlighted the strengthening relationship between Türkiye and Iraq, referencing agreements and memorandums forged during President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan’s visit to Iraq in 2024. These diplomatic strides were further solidified during the Iraqi prime minister’s visit to Türkiye in July, which resulted in additional strategic agreements.
The Development Road Project emerged as another significant area of collaboration. This planned transport corridor aims to enhance connectivity between Asia and Europe via Iraq and Türkiye, potentially boosting economic growth across the region. Kurtulmuş expressed Türkiye’s full support for accelerating the project, emphasizing that its components should become operational swiftly.
Describing the Development Road Project as more than merely an economic venture, Kurtulmuş suggested it could serve as a conduit for connecting communities, cities, and cultures, thereby fostering mutually beneficial cooperation.
