Tougher traffic laws and enhanced enforcement measures introduced in Türkiye earlier this year have led to a significant decrease in dangerous driving violations. The amendments to the country’s Highway Traffic Law, which took effect on February 27, impose stricter penalties for several offenses that pose major risks to road safety. These legislative changes have had a notable impact, particularly on dangerous lane-weaving violations, where drivers switch lanes at high speeds. Official data reveals a staggering 93% drop in such offenses, with 47,380 incidents reported between February 27 and May 31 last year, compared to just 3,306 in the same period this year.
The significant reduction in traffic violations is largely attributed to the combination of stronger penalties and increased road inspections conducted nationwide. This crackdown has not only impacted lane-weaving but has also resulted in declines across various other traffic violation categories. For instance, tachograph-related offenses, which involve commercial vehicle driving and rest-time records, have decreased by 80.2%. Speeding violations have also seen a substantial decrease, dropping by 55.1%.
Further improvements have been observed in the compliance with police stop orders, which fell by 52.4%. Additionally, helmet-related violations decreased by 36.4%, and instances of driving without a valid license declined by 33.7%. The comprehensive enforcement measures have contributed to lower rates of wrong-way driving, traffic sign violations, red-light offenses, drunk driving, and seat belt violations.
The government views these reforms as part of a broader strategy to enhance road safety, reduce accidents, and safeguard lives and property across the nation. The positive outcomes of these legislative and enforcement efforts are seen as a crucial step towards achieving these goals, reflecting the authorities’ commitment to improving road safety for all citizens. The sharp decline in traffic violations underscores the effectiveness of the measures, suggesting that the combined approach of stricter penalties and increased inspections is a promising avenue for reducing dangerous driving behaviors on Türkiye’s roads.
