The European Union is stepping up its efforts to address the long-standing Cyprus conflict by appointing new envoys and reaffirming its support for the United Nations-led peace initiative. This move comes as the EU prepares for an anticipated visit from UN Secretary-General António Guterres, signaling a renewed push to resolve the impasse that has persisted for decades.
Despite these efforts, Turkish Cypriot authorities have raised concerns about the EU’s impartiality in the matter. They argue that the EU cannot act as a neutral mediator because the Republic of Cyprus is an EU member state. Additionally, Turkish Cypriot officials expressed dissatisfaction over the EU’s decision to appoint a new special envoy for Cyprus without consulting them beforehand.
The European Commission has clarified that its appointed special representative will focus on fostering trust between the Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot communities. The representative’s role will also include supporting the resumption of negotiations within the UN framework, aimed at reaching a comprehensive and lasting settlement to the dispute.
Efforts to resolve the Cyprus issue have been stalled since 2017, with peace talks having made no significant progress in recent years. Turkish Cypriot leaders emphasize that any future negotiations should acknowledge their sovereign equality and equal international status as a prerequisite for moving forward with formal discussions.
