In a significant milestone, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni’s government has become the longest-serving administration in the history of the Italian Republic. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan extended his congratulations to Meloni, emphasizing the achievement and expressing optimism about the ongoing cooperation and solidarity between Türkiye and Italy. With Meloni’s leadership, her government surpassed the previous record of 1,412 consecutive days in office, a record once held by former Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi’s second government from 2001 to 2005.

Meloni made history by becoming Italy’s first female prime minister in October 2022. Since her ascent, she has fostered a close working relationship with Erdoğan, engaging in regular discussions on bilateral and regional issues. The two countries have focused on enhancing collaboration across various sectors, including trade, investment, defense, energy, and migration. This cooperation has been particularly notable in their joint efforts on regional matters such as the situations in Libya and Ukraine.

Türkiye and Italy’s commitment to strengthening their ties was further solidified during the fourth Türkiye-Italy Intergovernmental Summit, co-chaired by Erdoğan and Meloni in Rome in April 2025. This summit saw the signing of several agreements aimed at boosting their strategic and economic partnership, underscoring the importance both nations place on their relationship.

Recently, Erdoğan and Meloni met on the sidelines of the NATO summit held in Ankara in July. This encounter reaffirmed their shared intentions to enhance trade, mutual investments, and defense collaboration, along with other strategic sectors. These interactions reflect the deepening ties between Türkiye and Italy under the current leadership, marking a period of heightened diplomatic and economic engagement.
