Spotify Labels AI Artists, Excludes Them From Recommendations

Spotify is taking steps to address the increasing presence of AI-generated music on its platform. Beginning in September, artist profiles and track listings will feature an “AI persona” label for identities created by artificial intelligence. This initiative aims to help users distinguish between human and AI-generated artists while safeguarding the visibility of genuine musicians.

By default, AI-generated personas will not be included in Spotify’s personalized recommendations, a move designed to protect real musicians from losing exposure to AI-produced content. While artists will have the option to indicate if their identities are AI-generated, Spotify will also employ a combination of human reviewers and AI tools to identify any undeclared AI personas on the platform.

The decision comes in response to the rapid growth of AI-generated music. Spotify has previously disclosed the removal of 75 million spam tracks within a year, underscoring the influx of artificial and low-quality content on music streaming services.

As generative AI continues to play a larger role in the music industry, Spotify emphasizes the importance of transparency. The company notes that listeners increasingly want to know whether the artist behind a track is a real person or an AI-generated entity, making it crucial for the platform to provide clear distinctions.
