Ukraine’s War Experience Becomes a Shield for Middle Eastern Nations

Four years of enduring relentless drone attacks have given Ukraine something few nations possess: deep, practical expertise in stopping Iranian-made Shahed drones. Now, that expertise is being exported. President Zelenskyy announced that Ukraine will share its capabilities with the United States and Middle Eastern allies who are facing the same aerial threat.

Zelenskyy confirmed that he has spoken with leaders from the UAE, Qatar, Bahrain, Jordan, and Kuwait about defense cooperation, and that Ukraine has received a formal request from the United States. He gave the order for equipment and Ukrainian specialists to be provided, describing the arrangement as an expression of mutual support between nations aligned against shared threats.

The Shahed drone has become a symbol of Iran’s military power projection. Russia has used tens of thousands of these drones against Ukraine, and Iran has now turned them against nations in its own region. Ukraine, having endured the greatest volume of Shahed attacks in history, has developed countermeasures that no other nation can match in real-world experience.

Ukrainian industry has proved equal to the challenge, producing low-cost interceptor drones specifically built to destroy Shaheds. These systems, some costing under $1,000, contrast sharply with the multimillion-dollar aircraft other nations have deployed against drone threats. European nations received a stark reminder of this mismatch in September of last year when Poland used F-35s and Black Hawk helicopters to respond to cheap drone incursions.

In offering this assistance, Zelenskyy has also tied defense cooperation to his country’s diplomatic goals. Partners who benefit from Ukrainian expertise are expected to reciprocate by supporting Kyiv’s efforts to end the war with Russia. This linkage reflects a maturing foreign policy that seeks to convert Ukraine’s painful battlefield experience into lasting strategic value.
