Zelensky Says US Pushes June Endgame for War with Florida Peace Conference

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has announced that the United States is working toward ending the Russia-Ukraine conflict by June and has proposed Miami, Florida, as the location for next week’s crucial peace negotiations. This represents the most direct American involvement yet in facilitating talks between the warring nations.

The announcement came during remarks to reporters that were released early Saturday morning. Zelensky emphasized that this would mark the first occasion where Ukrainian and Russian negotiating teams would meet on United States soil, signaling a new phase in Washington’s mediation efforts. “The United States has proposed for the first time that the two negotiating teams — Ukraine and Russia — meet in the United States, probably in Miami, in a week’s time,” the Ukrainian leader stated.

The planned Miami meeting would be the third installment of US-brokered negotiations following two rounds already conducted in Abu Dhabi starting in January. The Abu Dhabi sessions successfully facilitated a major exchange of prisoners between the two sides but failed to make progress on resolving territorial disagreements. Russia presently controls about one-fifth of Ukraine’s territory and is insisting on gaining formal authority over more land in the eastern Donetsk region as a condition for peace.

Kyiv has categorically refused to surrender any Ukrainian territory to Russian control, viewing such concessions as fundamentally unacceptable violations of sovereignty and international law. Moscow has declared its territorial demands non-negotiable and has threatened to resume intensive military operations if diplomatic talks do not produce favorable territorial arrangements. This impasse over borders and sovereignty represents the most significant barrier to achieving a lasting peaceful resolution.

Diplomatic efforts proceed against a backdrop of continued military conflict. In a video posted Saturday, Zelensky revealed that Russian forces had attacked facilities essential to the functioning of Ukraine’s nuclear power plants during the previous night. These strikes caused several nuclear units to reduce their power output, with one reactor automatically shutting down for safety reasons. Zelensky condemned the attacks as unprecedented acts of terrorism and insisted Russia must demonstrate commitment to peace negotiations by halting strikes on critical civilian infrastructure.
